Mission Statement::: Handicapped Driver Services is a specialized team of adaptive equipment professionals. Our compassionate and committed workforce is dedicated to providing increased vehicular mobility and independence to individuals not fully served by the traditional automotive market. Our team provides innovative solutions and superior products to assist each client in obtaining the highest quality of life possible.
About HDS
Following the Vietnam War, veterans returned from the military with a variety of disabilities. In previous wars, the survival rate of our armed forces that were injured in battle was considerably less than in the Vietnam War. This influx of disabled veterans produced the first major upswing in the industry we know today as the "adaptive equipment industry".
Our Federal government was there with the funding and Jim Craig, the founder of Handicapped Driver Services, also a veteran, was there with the desire to help. Jim was working as a driver trainer to supplement his income as a newly hired flight engineer with Delta Airlines. He started training drivers with disabilities and the evaluation and training division of Handicapped Driver Services began. Jim soon purchased a van and started to perform van evaluations for wheelchair drivers. More and more adaptive equipment became commercially available and what was not available, Jim and his employees made or modified. In 1984, Jim, always a visionary, entered the wheelchair equipped rental van business. Handicapped Driver Services was one of the first firms in the country to rent accessible vans!
Handicapped Driver Services started in a small building off of Buford Highway in Atlanta. As the business expanded, Jim moved to Marietta, where he grew through two more locations. In 1990, I joined Jim as an employee and ultimately bought Handicapped Driver Services from him in 1991. We continued to grow and in 1994 moved to a location in the Kennesaw Mountain Business Park just north of Marietta off of 1-75. In January of 2003 Handicapped Driver Services moved to the newly constructed Accessibility Services Plaza on Hwy 41 in Marietta. Our ultra modern 30,000 square foot facility boasts three complete welding bays, a complete paint and body department, 8 installation bays and a full service and repair department. All are staffed by factory certified technicians. We are accredited through NMEDA's Quality Assurance program as an Accredited Mobility Equipment Installer, Structural Vehicle Modifier, and High Tech Driving Systems Installer. Today, Handicapped Driver Services employs over 30 full time employees including two Certified Driver Rehabilitation Specialists. Handicapped Driver Services is the largest installer of electronic driving systems in North America. In addition to our adaptive equipment installations, we rent and lease full-sized and minivans through our Accessible Vans of Georgia and North Florida division. Handicapped Driver Services, Inc. offers sales and service of all major lines of adaptive equipment and all major lines of lowered floor mini-vans.
Handicapped Driver Services has added locations in Nashville, TN and Birmingham, AL.
